Dell Vostro 200

Bleep Rating

vostro200The Vostro 200 is an astoundingly cheap desktop that offers few thrills. It does surprise by being reasonably upgradeable; there are two DDR2 slots for extra memory, there is space for 2 hard drives and two optical drives, it also comes with 2 pci slots & 1 pci express slot although if you are thinking high end graphics card, think again because the power supply isn’t up to much.

I still can’t believe Dell ship their cheap desktops with VGA ports instead of DVI. Another couple of annoying features are the old noisy 250GB hard drive shipped with my model and the range on the included intel 802.11 n wireless card, I get a far better signal from a €10 cheap usb dongle!

All of these negative points don’t really detract from the fact that the Vostro 200 offers amazing value for money. If you want a cheap basic but reasonably capable desktop, go for it!

I’m buying one of these tomorrow for my father.

20″ screen with 3GBs of RAM, 250GB HD and XP/Vista bundle pack for something like €469 can’t be beat. The box looks pretty good too for a cheap Dell, even if it is a bit noisy as per your review. If the noise gets too much I’ll upgrade the power supply and add throw in a few extra fans anyway.

I got a Vostro 200 a few months ago and I’ actually surprised by how quiet mine is! It can make an odd low whirr when I first turn it on sometimes, but it seems silent to me otherwise. I know it’s very early days, and I went for a few upgrades so it was not dirt cheap, but I’m very pleased so far.
